The 2013 ARC Rally for Cruisers

ARC Rally St. Lucia Sugar Beach

The ARC, or Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, is an annual event which takes place in November. The occasion sees over 200 boats sail from Gran Canaria to St Lucia in the Caribbean. For many sailors, the ARC is an essential part of their overall sailing experience. Families with children, cruising couples and hard racers all take part in this exhilarating, life-defining event.

Not just any old boat excursion; the ARC encompasses two fun-filled weeks onshore prior to departure in order to give sailors a chance to make new friends and forge firm sailing bonds. Anyone participating is also eligible for a number of discounts on marina berths, training cruises and cruising equipment. Once at sea, sailors can either choose to sail straight to Saint Lucia, or to detour to Sao Vicente part-way through the rally.

The exciting news for sailors sailing the ARC in 2013 is that an extra forty pontoon spaces have been allocated for yachts in Las Palmas marina, meaning more people than ever before can join in. The crews sailing in the rally hail from thirty countries, thus proving that the ARC rally truly is a global event. Familiar and not-so familiar faces will arrive in Las Palmas throughout November for a host of great activities, including seminars and drinks parties. Once they reach St. Lucia, a prize giving ceremony will be hosted on the 20th December.

The sense of achievement that is felt after crossing the Atlantic in a small boat is one which is unrivalled in the sailing world. Perhaps that’s why so many sailors choose to return to the rally year after year. Once sailors arrive in Rodney Bay Marina, Saint Lucia, they are welcomed with rum punch, fresh fruit and beer. In fact, there are so many beautiful sights to see and things to do on St. Lucia that many sailors end up staying for Christmas on the island!
